Wish Upon a Star With Disney and Steve Harvey

No Comments 10 September 2009

“When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are. Anything your heart desires will come to you. . . “

That’s the message Disney and Steve Harvey are spreading to teens, with the hope that they’ll pack their bags—and their dreams—and head to Walk Disney World Resort to participate in the Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey. The event, created to inspire and enrich high school students, invites 100 kids to participate in workshops with Disney cast members and executives, hear inspirational stories from entertainment celebrities and professional athletes, and enjoy the Disney theme parks – where they can see, first-hand, the results of people who turned their dreams into careers as “Disney dreamers.” They’lll learn about careers in everything from culinary arts to animation, set design and show production to the business of sports and more. Indeed, during the 2009 Disney’s Dreamers Academy, some of the guest speakers were Chef Jeff Henderson, National Football League Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, pop/R&B recording artists Fantasia and Keyshia Cole, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith and, of course, Steve Harvey.

Nominations for the Class of 2010 are being accepted from now until Oct. 2, 2009; young dreamers—who must be enrolled in high school for the 2009-10 term—can be nominated by anyone, including parents, guardians, teachers, church members, social organizations—even themselves. Although a high GPA is not required, students must exhibit a desire to learn, perhaps needing only additional motivational support to excel.

Take it from Steve: This is a fantastic program meant to inspire young people who normally don’t have a chance to be exposed to a variety of job skills and job opportunities and meet with people in the fields they’re interested in. “We want to give our young achievers the tools to become overachievers—to make their dreams a reality,” he said.

Amen to that, my brother. I can’t tell you how inspiring it was for me when I was in the 11th grade to attend and volunteer at a National Association of Black Journalists conference, where black writers and broadcasters from around the country gathered to talk about careers in journalism. I left that conference convinced that I just HAD to be a writer—and it was all because someone took the time to just talk to me about it. That’s all it took—exposure.

Won’t you help a teenager in your life realize his/her dream? All it takes is for us grown-ups to take the initiative to fill out a form—a simple form. WE can potentially change a kid’s life. I have a few kids in mind that I’d like to nominate. If you know someone who would benefit from the Disney’s Dreams Academy with Steve Harvey, click HERE to fill out the nomination forms.

Shameless MyBrownBaby Self-Promotion: "Never Make the Same Mistake Twice."

29 Comments 20 August 2009

Yup, I wrote it.

I figured I’d just put it on out there because I keep getting Facebook messages, emails, and phone calls from my people asking, “Girl, is that you holding Nene’s hand in the commercials?!”

The answer: Yes, that is me in the promos for an upcoming episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, in which Nene and I are discussing her memoir, the book I helped her write. Never Make the Same Mistake Twice: Lessons On Love and Life Learned the Hard Way, hit bookstores on Tuesday, smack dab in the middle of the explosive second season of Bravo’s Atlanta Housewives franchise. Hate it or love it, The Real Housewives of Atlanta is appointment TV, and Nene’s cut-throat, in-your-face, keepin’-it-real antics with castmates Kim Zolciak, Sheree Whitfield, Kandi Burress and Lisa Hartwell are downright addictive.

For all the smack Nene talks on RHOA, though, she really brings it in the pages of “Mistake,” in which she exposes her dark past as a stripper, a domestic abuse victim, and the illegitimate daughter of parents who gave her up for adoption and kept her paternal lineage a secret. Sensational as her backstory is, it’s also poignant, and definitely helps to explain Nene’s journey toward becoming the reality show sensation she is today. Yes, she goes after Kim and Sheree in her book, but those two chapters are but a small part of her incredible story, which we crafted as a revealing tell-all to help inspire women facing the same challenges Nene dealt with as a teenager and young single mother.

For sure, it’s a good story, told in Nene’s signature, raw voice, but written in a way that brings honor to her story. (Come on, now: You know I’m not going to co-sign on any bull.) To see an excerpt, click HERE.

Never Make the Same Mistake Twice comes on the heels of my book with Steve Harvey, the New York Times best-selling advice book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. My 17th and 18th books, a novel for tweens and a picture book I penned with Holly Robinson Peete, hit stores next Spring.

As for my appearance on RHOA, I’m not sure which episode I’ll be on, or how it’ll be edited, or if I’ll look like a complete idiot when it’s shown, so say a prayer that mama preserves at least a modicum of class when I make my reality show debut. And even if I do look like Bobo the Fool, at the very least, let’s hope the “Nene’s Writing a Book” storyline makes “Never Make the Same Mistake Twice” a bestseller, because mama’s gotta send three brown babies to Yale.

Don’t play. Pray.

Amen.

Oprah + "Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man" = VERY Happy Author. Plus: Win A Copy Of The Book!

28 Comments 01 March 2009

My God, this is practically the first time in three days that I’ve taken a breath—felt my heart beat at a normal, human pace.

This is B-I-G, considering the B-I-G thing that set my heart aflutter on Friday.

Oprah. Was. Reading. My. Words.

On. Her. Show.

Had. The. Pages. Tabbed. With. Sticky. Notes.

And. Said. She. Loved. The. Book.

The book with thoughts I collected from comedian Steve Harvey, and turned into “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man,” the best selling tome that’s been at the top of the New York Times Hardcover Advice Best Seller’s List for the past four weeks.

Steve, for whom I wrote “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man,” did an incredible job, breaking down for Oprah, Gail, and all those who were watching what women need to do to take back our power, make our relationships stronger, and get the guys we deserve. And she even invited him back for a chat with an all-female audience, so he’d have more time to break it down so it’ll forever be broke.

I’m so proud of Steve.

And so humbled by the attention and love “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man” has gotten, everywhere from The Today Show and The Wall St. Journal to Essence.com and super addictive blogs like Renaissance Black Woman.

Yup, this book, which I’ve written about HERE a few times on MyBrownBaby, is quite the bees knees.

But don’t just take Oprah’s word for it—you really ought to try it out for yourself. And who am I to deny MyBrownBaby readers a chance to do just that?
